Music & Performance

Being involved in the Music department as a Sixth Former is highly encouraged and is a fantastic way to build confidence and leadership skills. Beyond the personal enrichment, the commitment shown to learning an instrument,  rehearsals and performances is highly regarded by universities and employers. Furthermore, the higher-grade instrumental exams taken provide valuable UCAS points, strengthening any student's future applications.

At Dixie music is a lived experience open to all pupils who attend the Sixth Form; from our expert one-to-one tuition in voice, piano, or orchestral instruments, weekly Ensembles, the spotlight of Assembly Music, spectacular whole school Music or the firework-lit stages of Dixie Fest, we provide a creative platform for every performer to shine.

Instrumental Lessons & Ensembles

We provide a rich variety of opportunities for pupils to hone their individual talents and share their passion for performance.

Individual Instrumental Tuition We are proud to offer a comprehensive peripatetic program, allowing pupils to receive one-on-one specialist tuition during the school day. Whether a student is a complete beginner or an advanced musician preparing for higher grades, our visiting teachers provide expert guidance. We currently offer tuition in the following:

  • Instruments Offered: Voice, Piano, Guitar, Cello, Violin, Flute, Clarinet, Saxophone, Drums.

Ensemble Opportunities Pupils are encouraged to join our various ensembles, which rehearse weekly and perform in a variety of concerts and events throughout the academic year. These groups provide a fantastic platform for pupils to develop teamwork and leadership skills, build confidence, and apply the skills learned in instrumental lessons.

  • Ensembles on offer: Orchestra, Dixie Voices, Band rehearsal and Harmony singing.

Signature Events & Traditions

  • The Red Carpet Extravaganza: A truly spectacular showcase celebrating the "Creative Arts" in their entirety, featuring our Orchestra, bands, soloists, and dancers.

  • Carol Service: A beautiful, traditional service held at St. Peter’s Church featuring the Dixie Voices, the Orchestra, and soloists.

Regular Performance Platforms

  • Weekly Assembly Music: Every week, pupils perform as the school arrives for assembly to gain performance experience in a more relaxed setting.
  • Soloist Showcases: Dedicated evenings throughout the year designed to highlight the incredible individual progress of our instrumentalists and singers.

From the quiet dignity of the Carol Service to the explosive energy of Dixie Fest, we ensure every pupil has the chance to shine, regardless of their genre or level.

At Dixie Grammar School, we make sure music is something every student can enjoy and excel in. By combining our classroom lessons with plenty of chances to perform, we make music a huge part of school life. Our goal is to help students build a love for the arts and give them the confidence to perform on any stage.
