Our Curriculum
In the Junior School at the Dixie Grammar School, we build upon the foundations laid in our nursery to foster academic excellence and a genuine love for learning. Our curriculum is designed to be rigorous yet captivating, ensuring that every child from Year 1 to Year 5 feels like an explorer on a continuous journey.
We believe that children learn best when they can see the natural connections between different subjects. From Year 1 through Year 5, our curriculum is delivered through dynamic thematic topics that typically span a half-term.
By weaving History, Geography, Science, and the Arts into a single cohesive narrative, we make learning more meaningful and engaging. Whether they are learning about where food comes from in the topic of "Field to fork" or reliving the heroic stories of the Battle of Britain in our WWII topic, our pupils don't just memorise facts; they develop a deep, multi-layered understanding of the world around them.
A Strong Foundation: Little Wandle Phonics
English is the gateway to the entire curriculum. In Reception and Key Stage 1, we follow the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised program. This is a systematic, synthetic phonics scheme that provides:
- Consistency: A clear daily progression that builds confidence.
- Matched Reading: Pupils read books that are perfectly aligned with their current phonetic knowledge.
- Rapid Progress: Focused catch-up sessions ensure no child is left behind as they develop the vital skills to become fluent, independent readers.
Specialist Excellence
While our class teachers provide the core pastoral and academic heart of the day, we introduce specialist subject teachers to provide depth and expertise. At Dixie Grammar, specialist input begins early and expands as the children grow:
